UW Admissions Elective Recommendations

Two years of a single foreign language are required for admission to  UW-Madison, and strongly recommended at other UW System campuses.  Some UW System campuses may also accept technical and career courses for a portion of these 4 elective credits.

Core Areas = English, Math, Science, Social Studies

UW-Fox Valley - 4 Electives: chosen from the core areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other academic areas.

UW- Eau Claire - 2 Foreign Language: two years of one language. These are the minimum required courses; most students will exceed this expectation.

UW-Green Bay - The freshmen who enrolled in the fall of 2012 had an average of 4 units from each of the core subject areas (English, science, math, and social science). In addition, incoming freshmen had an average of 3 years of foreign language. Students who complete only the minimums listed above will be below average in the freshman class, and will be at a distinct competitive disadvantage.

UW-LaCrosse - Foreign language -most admitted students have completed three credits.

UW- Madison - Two credits of a single foreign language are required. (Most admitted students have completed four credits.)

UW- Milwaukee - Foreign language is not required for admission. However, students must complete at least two college semesters of a single foreign language to graduate from UWM, and some programs require four or more semesters of foreign language study. Successful completion of at least two years of a single foreign language at the high school level will help you satisfy the UWM foreign language requirement, and is therefore strongly recommended.

UW-Oshkosh
- 4 Electives: chosen from the core areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other academic areas. Most admitted students have completed additional college preparatory units in math or science. Applicants who meet the minimum credit requirements are given consideration for admission; however, admission is not automatic or guaranteed.

UW-Parkside - While foreign language is not a requirement for admission to UW-Parkside, students who have not completed two years of one foreign language in high school (with a minimum average grade of C in year two) will be required to complete foreign language at the college level.

UW-Platteville - Although foreign language is not required for admission, students may fulfill the UW-Platteville graduation requirement in foreign language by taking two years of the same foreign language in high school.

UW-River Falls - 4 Electives: chosen from the core areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other academic, technical, and career areas. Academic preparation, specifically the strength of high school course work, is an important part of the admission decision. To be best prepared for college, applicants are encouraged to exceed the minimum credit requirements for admission.

UW-Stevens Point
- 4 Electives: two must be chosen from the core areas or foreign language, fine arts, or computer science (excluding keyboarding). Two may be from the above areas and other academic, technical, and career areas (excluding cooperative education).

UW-Stout - Although foreign language is not required for admission, students may fulfill the global perspective requirement by completing two years of a single foreign language in high school.

UW-Superior - 4 Electives: chosen from the core areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other academic, technical, and career areas.

UW-Whitewater - 4 Electives: chosen from the core areas, foreign language, fine arts, computer science, and other academic areas.
